Hi, I'm John McKenny. Welcome to my website.
I have in excess of 30 years experience in the industry, which includes leasing and managing swim centres, as well as training and providing advisory services and also onsite training to swim centres throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Many organisations, local councils and businesses have benefitted from my services over the years.
I'm also the Author of the books:
- "The Complete Swimming Pool Handbook - revised", published April 2009,
and
- "The easy-to-understand Leisure Pool and Spa Handbook".
Whether you are looking for assistance with design, management, planning or operational issues with your swim centre or you are looking to have some staff trained (at your own site) or you just want to ask me any question about your pool or anything relating to pools, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Macquatics Training - "Dedicated to improving the quality of Swim Centre Management"
Macquatics On-Site Swim Centre Training provides training in swim centre operations, supervision and management. What's more, we come to you.
The idea of providing swimming pool training on-site is now regarded as the most effective and affordable method of having staff at swimming pools trained and receive a formal TAFE qualification.
Your organisation could save thousands of dollars with Macquatics On-Site Training coming to you at your swim centre, anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
THE COURSE COVERS ALL THE SWIM CENTRE ESSENTIALS.
What is covered during the On-Site Macquatics Training?
- Water Testing - the how, when, where and why of both pool and incoming water supply testing is discussed, demonstrated and taught to all students, to ensure that they can do all the necessary tests. This is an area of essential competence.
- Water chemistry - informing and not confusing students on what happens to their swimming pool water when the different chemicals are added. Then, how much to add, and especially, how to safely handle all chemicals.
- Chemical Identification - knowing the chemicals, correct labelling, storage, handling and disposal of spilt chemical.
- Active and effective supervision.
- Complete swimming pool safety, for both customers and staff.
- Local issues - any concerns students have are discussed.
- Plant and equipment identification, maintenance and operation.
- Swim centre promotion, customer service and accident prevention.

Who will benefit from the training?
Macquatics On-Site Training has been designed to teach:
- Aquatic Managers, controlling one or several facilities;
- Contractors/Lessees of swim centres;
- Operators;
- Supervisors;
- Trainees;
- Private and backyard pool owners and operators; and
- Resort and holiday facility operators and owner/managers.
What are the benefits of On-Site Macquatics Training?
- There are many, but probably the greatest benefit with this training, is enabling participants to obtain a formal TAFE qualification. The courses are taught to TAFE standards, so the important nationally recognised TAFE qualification can be obtained.
- Macquatics Training Certificates are issued to students completing the course, but enroling in the TAFE I'm associated with will have students obtaining a formal and nationally recognised TAFE qualification in aquatics. For some, there will be apractical assessment and the need to have a Pool Lifeguarg and First Aid Certificate, but for those with these qualifications and being experienced, TAFE enrolment is all that's needed to obtain a Statement of Attainment in Aquatics.
- It is usually unnecessary to send employees/students away for further assessment as it's all done during the on-site training and at the workplace.
- Local issues - students can discuss any local issues or difficulties they are having with the operations of their swimming pool, so local issues are delt with and solved during the training. This promotes class activity and enhances learning through student participation.
- Holistic training - during the training there is an emphasis placed on water testing, chemical addition, safety, cleanliness and effective supervision. At the end of the on-site training, all areas of operating and managing a swimming pool are covered. Adequate time is given to everything that's important when running a swim centre, regardless of whether it's a small country pool or a large aquatic facility with multiple acticities.
- Convenience - no staff travelling to a TAFE somewhere. Providing vehicles and accommodation plus expenses during the staff time away can get very expensive.
- Cost - By taking advantage of the Macquatics On-Site Training, the employer (council) will make substantial savings on the normal cost to send staff away to be trained.
- Total convenience - When are the most suitable days and times for this staff training? Once that's established, give me a call and the training can be organised accordingly. That's a far cry from sending staff to TAFE somewhere after they decide when students must attend. The best times for our on-site training are 2-3 weeks prior to the swim centre opening if it's a seasonal facility, or during the quieter periods for indoor or busy swim centres. Training can be organised to fit in with staff commitments each day.
- Certificates - a Macquatics Training Certificate is issued to all students completing the training. To obtain a formal TAFE qualification, experienced swim centre operators usually only need to enrol in the aquatics course at the TAFE I'm affiliated with, and a TAFE Statement of Attainment will be issued. It is normally never necessary to send staff away for further training and/or assessment.
- More efficient - less work time lost;
- Convenient - your staff are on site, plus no travel/accommodation arrangements to worry about; and
- More beneficial to both staff and owners - solving local problems during the visit.
Also:
- Quality class notes are provided for all participants. The regular use of and referral to The Complete Swimming Pool Handbook works as an excellent reference for both experienced and new pool staff.
- Follow-up advice and assistance, with hundreds of aquatic industry links.A totally free, no obligation advisory service is available to students and the aquatic industry generally.
- The course is very practical and hands on, with demonstrations and student involvement at the swim centre.
Resorts, chemical companies, large private organisations and local councils in Australia have taken advantage of the on-site training offered by Macquatics Training. Many of these now arrange regular return visits for re-training, to assist existing staff and train any new employees.
It's simply the easiest, cheapest and most convenient way to ensure that the swim centre staff have the required qualifications and knowledge!
Here are a few of the actual comments written on the Course Evaluation Form for students:
- "will be having my two senior guards to do the course asap"
- "enjoyed it! John was great."
- "excellent!"
- "very informative with practical application to workplace"

So many swimming pools are aged and in need of serious upgrades or at least, urgent maintenance.
After more than 30 years being involved with the upgrading of swimming pools, plant rooms and equipment both large and small, I'm experienced and available to assist.
Most owners of swimming pools have aged facilities, needing repairs, maintenance and an upgrade, to obtain effective filtration and comply with the required circulation rates and water quality standards.
Inexpensive and practical advice can be given to pool owners who prefer to do an affordable and staged upgrading of their pools, to fit in with their budgetting.
Quite often, obtaining the services of consultants can be very expensive and simply too dear for pool owners to consider, but not with Macquatics Training.
Contact me for an approximate cost to advise you with this technical work. I think you'll be pleased you did.
